Project Description

The use of information technology (IT) services to access information and process large-scale data sets is becoming indispensable for proper operation of our modern digital world. These IT services today generate 50% of the value in the developed world’s economy. This tremendous proliferation of IT services was made possible by the advances in semiconductor fabrication of computing platforms over the past four decades. The soaring demand for computing has produced as collateral undesirable effect a surge in power consumption and density of computing systems world-wide, but especially in Switzerland that generates a large percentage of its economic growth due to services (banking industry, data storage, telecom industry, etc.). Indeed, the electricity costs of datacenters are skyrocketing worldwide.
